TASTING SYSTEM

The tastings are blind, the bottles are rendered anonymous by the organising team, as soon as they are received, being placed in a neutral packaging, guarantying anonymity.

In the Championship, the competition begins with a series of blind tasting rounds in which each wine is randomly paired with another. In every pairing, the wine that receives the majority of favorable votes from the jury advances to the next round, while the other wine is eliminated from the championship. Once a round is complete, the winning wines are randomly paired again for subsequent rounds, where each pairing is again judged by the jury members. This process continues, with wines facing new randomly picked opponents at every stage, until the competition reaches what we refer to as the Round of 32 (when there are only 32 wines remaining).

HOW IT WILL BE JUDGED

Initial rounds: Wines are paired and judged, with the winners advancing to the next stage.
Round of 32.
Following competition bracket: Wines continue to compete in a knockout format until the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final.

At the Round of 32, the winners of these duels move forward to the Round of 16. In this round, each wine is set to compete against the adjacent winner as determined by the competition bracket. The winners then advance through the quarterfinals, then the semifinals, and ultimately, the final round where the champion wine is crowned. This structured elimination process ensures that every wine is given a fair chance to prove its quality through multiple rounds of blind tasting, culminating in the selection of the best wine in the championship.
Within each of The Wine League’s 2025 [VARIETAL] WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPs, during the tasting, jury members will be asked to single out wines that at different stages of the Championship, perform outstandingly (regardless of winning or not). These wines will be highlighted and their stories told.
